You, who are reading these lines—where virtues and vices clash within you—come and discover with us the events that led to the beginning of the Hundred Years’ War.

We find ourselves in the year 1337, when English kings held numerous estates on French soil and were in many ways more powerful than the King of France himself. The conflict began with disputes over control of the English wool trade in Flanders. Tensions peaked when the Count of Flanders arrested English merchants, and England responded with a trade embargo. This sparked an uprising—and ignited what would become a hundred-year struggle.

If you want to learn how this conflict unfolded and become part of its dramatic events yourself, you can experience this story through larp.

She ran through the house, desperately searching for somewhere to hide from him. Screams, blows, and agonized groans echoed all around her. She knew he was close. She glanced back—and didn’t see the pool of blood ahead. She slipped and crashed to the ground. Her brother’s lifeless body lay beside her. Footsteps approached behind her. Fast, too fast. She tried to get up, but slipped again. He was already looming over her, a poker in his hands and a cruel smile on his face. She frantically searched for anything she could use to defend herself, but deep down she knew it was pointless. When the first blow landed, she knew she had lost this race for her life. It was her fault. She deserved it. She was still breathing when he let the poker fall and stepped over her dying body. It happened again.

Ocitáme se v roce 1337, kdy angličtí králové drželi na francouzském území četné statky a byli mocnější než samotný král Francie. Konflikt začal spory o nadvládu nad obchodem s anglickou vlnou ve Flandrech. Napětí vyvrcholilo, když flanderský hrabě pozatýkal anglické obchodníky a Anglie odpověděla obchodním embargem. Následovalo povstání a rozhořelo se ve stoletý boj.

On the occasion of the anniversary of the end of an unpleasant war, we bring you a report from a foreign international larp. The article was created based on an interview and memories of one of the Czech participants, Jan Newman Novák. The larp will have further reruns and we hope that we will experience similar things only in this playful form.

Larps offer a unique space for discovery, role-playing, and the forging of new relationships across age groups and levels of experience. For many young participants, it’s their first opportunity to go somewhere on their own, meet kindred spirits, and experience something truly extraordinary. But this openness and diversity also come with challenges—particularly around how to create a safe and supportive environment for those who are new to the community and unfamiliar with its norms.

We aim to share a perspective on how the larp environment can be cultivated to remain open and inspiring, while also being sensitive to the needs of vulnerable participants.

U příležitosti výročí ukončení jedné nepříjemné války přinášíme reportáž ze zahraničního mezinárodního larpu. Článek vznikl na základě rozhovoru a vzpomínek jednoho z českých účastníků, Honzy Newmana Nováka. Larp bude mít další běhy a my budeme doufat, že podobné věci budeme zažívat pouze touto hravou formou.

Larpy nabízejí jedinečný prostor pro objevování, hraní rolí – a také navazování nových vztahů napříč věkem i zkušenostmi. Pro mnohé mladé účastníky jsou první příležitostí vyrazit někam sami, potkat spřízněné duše a zažít něco výjimečného. Právě tato otevřenost a rozmanitost ale zároveň přináší i určité výzvy – například v tom, jak vytvářet bezpečné a podpůrné prostředí pro ty, kteří se teprve seznamují s komunitou a jejími zvyklostmi. Přinášíme pohled na to, jak lze prostředí larpu kultivovat tak, aby zůstalo otevřené, inspirující a zároveň citlivé k potřebám zranitelnějších účastníků.

In the past year, we had the opportunity to visit dozens of games in the Czech Republic. You can see their dates on two calendars, you can add the ratings of the larps to the Larp database, and a summary of current events appears every three weeks in the Larp newsletter. And we remember many larps through photographs.

V uplynulém roce jsme měli možnost navštívit desítky her. Jejich termíny se dají sledovat na dvou našich kalendářích, jejich hodnocení můžete přidávat na Larpovou databázi, shrnutí aktuálního dění se každé tři týdny objeví v Larpovém newsletteru. A mnoho larpů si pak připomínáme skrze fotografie.

Příběhy jako terminus technicus jsou formát larpu, který vznikl v roce 2014 a letos proběhne podesáté. Nemá pravidelně určeno místo, čas ani organizační tým, ale stojí na jednoduché myšlence, že za obsah a kvalitu larpu nesou zodpovědnost všichni. Jak něco takového vůbec může fungovat, jaké to má přednosti, ale také s jakými problémy se potýká?

Larpový fotograf je všemi oblíbený archetyp vítaný prakticky na každé akci. A ten chce být dobrý ve svém řemesle, svým úsilím uspokojit požadavky hráčů i organzátorů a ještě se tvůrčím způsobem někam posunout. Že to není něco snadného ani samozřejmého, napadne asi každého, kdo si někdy prohlížel výsledky různých fotografů a různých akcí. Ale naděje existuje. A dobří larpoví fotografové také.

S propuknutím pandemie a omezením všech shromáždění samozřejmě došlo úhony i organizování larpů všech druhů a velikostí. Přesto se dál hraje: larpy se začaly přizpůsobovat nebo rovnou tvořit pro online prostředí. Navzdory spekulacím, nakolik je to vlastně larp (a jak tomu správně říkat), se samotná praxe nad podobnými filozofickými otázkami nepozastavuje a my se tak v českém prostředí setkáváme s mnoha e-larpy či online larpy, ať už českými originály, nebo přejatými ze zahraničí. V tomto článku vám přinášíme přehled těch her, které se hrály, hrají a mnohdy ještě hrát budou.

“Sabine is a successful magazine publisher, a political activist and she is running in the local elections. She is raising her daughter Denise together with her second wife Veronica. And this evening she is throwing a party for several friends. Although Sabine and some other characters are lesbians, the larp in itself doesn’t deal with the topic of coming out. It’s about love, friendship, partnership and parenting. And also a bit about women… The game is suited for mature and experienced players who like to play out conflicts and develop in-game situations.”
